What is a physical therapist?

Physical Therapists are clinical experts of the human musculoskeletal system as it relates to movement. They are often the practitioners of choice for individuals suffering from diseases or injuries that have impaired mobility. Through patient education and skilled interventions, physical therapists provide their patients with the tools they need to manage and/or prevent their condition, restore lost mobility, reduce pain, and live healthy and active lives.

What is a biomechanist?

Biomechanics is a diverse field of study that applies principles from physics and engineering to the study of biological systems. A biomechanist is an expert in the field of biomechanics who utilizes his/her skills in developing technology and/or therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring function and mobility in individuals suffering from orthopedic and/or neurologic disorders. Biomechanists may specialize in one or more of the following areas: orthopedics, sports, ergonomics, orthotics and prostethics, muscle, human locomotion, and motor control.

Dr. Awad is a licensed Physical Therapist in the state of Delaware. He is a graduate of the highly regarded Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Delaware, and is currently pursuing a second doctoral degree in the research area of Biomechanics and Movement Science, with a focus on Motor Development and Brain Behavior. Dr. Awad is committed to science-based health care, as well as to the advancement of rehabilitation research. He aims to develop novel and effective interventions for movement-related problems in patients suffering from neurological disorders. He is a published researcher in the area of human locomotion, and specializes in neurologic rehabilitation.
